The Morgan Silver Dollar stands as one of the most famous silver coins in United States history, representing a major shift in the nation's monetary system. Following the Coinage Act of 1873, which had stopped the production of silver dollars, the passage of the Bland-Allison Act in February 1878 restored silver as legal tender. This legislation mandated that the United States Mint purchase silver bullion to strike these substantial coins, which contain 0.7734 troy ounces of fine silver with a purity of 90 percent. Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. Morgan used Anna Willess Williams as his model, capturing a classic profile that came to define the era. The reverse displays a majestic bald eagle clutching both an olive branch and arrows, a symbol of peace and readiness. The reverse also bears the inscriptions United States of America, One Dollar, and the national motto, In God We Trust.
