The Morgan Silver Dollar stands as one of the most recognized and celebrated silver coins in United States history. Minted from 1878 to 1904, these specific pieces survive in average circulated condition, showing the honest wear of coins that once passed from hand to hand. Each coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, struck with a fineness of 0.900 silver. The creation of this series was prompted by the Bland-Allison Act of February 1878, which restored silver as legal tender after its production had been halted by the Coinage Act of 1873. Under this new law, the United States Treasury was mandated to buy a set amount of silver every month specifically to be turned into coinage, leading to a massive production effort by the United States Mint. Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse of the coin displays a left-facing profile of Liberty. Morgan chose Anna Willess Williams to serve as his model for this depiction. On the reverse, a bald eagle holds a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. The reverse also features the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and the motto In God We Trust, capturing the spirit of a growing nation.
