Minted between the years 1878 and 1904, this historic silver coin represents a significant shift in American coinage design. The obverse displays a left facing portrait of Lady Liberty, modeled by Anna Willess Williams. This particular depiction is notable for being the first United States coin to present Lady Liberty with a distinctly American appearance, departing from traditional European styles. Her cap is decorated with agricultural symbols of the nation, specifically wheat and cotton. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with anatomically correct proportions and carefully designed feathers. The eagle is shown holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons.
