In 1878, a legendary era of American silver coinage began. This specific dollar represents the very first year of the celebrated Morgan Dollar series, minted in the historic frontier town of Carson City, Nevada. Struck from 0.900 fine silver with a precious metal content of 0.7734 troy ounces, these heavy silver coins served as a staple of daily commerce in the United States for roughly 80 years. The obverse of the coin presents a classic profile of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap, a traditional emblem of freedom, adorned with the word "Liberty" along its band. Encircling her portrait are thirteen stars representing the original colonies, the year of issue 1878, and the timeless Latin motto "E Pluribus Unum."
