The year 1878 marked the debut of a legendary American silver series. Among the first of these coins to enter circulation were those struck at the remote Carson City Mint in Nevada, identified by the famous double-C mark on the reverse. This particular specimen survived decades of active use, leaving it in a heavily circulated state that displays the honest wear of nineteenth-century commerce. On the front of the coin, the profile of Liberty faces left. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap, decorated with a band that displays her name. The reverse features a bald eagle with its wings spread, grasping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The words "In God we trust" are inscribed above the eagle, while the denomination of one dollar and the country name frame the design. Struck from 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, this coin represents a production run of 2,212,000 pieces from that inaugural year.
