The year 1878 marked the debut of a legendary American silver series. Among the most coveted of these inaugural issues are those struck at the frontier mint in Carson City, Nevada, bearing the famous double-C mint mark. This particular specimen has survived the decades in an exceptional state of preservation, graded Mint State 64 and housed in a historic Government Services Administration (GSA) holder. The obverse design presents a classic profile of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom, which is decorated with native American agricultural elements, specifically wheat and cotton. The year 1878 is cleanly inscribed below the portrait. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, grasping both an olive branch of peace and arrows of readiness. This coin is struck from 90% fine silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. Its brilliant uncirculated surfaces offer a direct window into late nineteenth-century American coinage history.
