In 1878, the United States introduced a new silver dollar design that would become one of the most celebrated in American numismatic history. This initial year of production saw the Carson City Mint strike 2,212,000 pieces, each bearing the famous CC mint mark. Crafted from 0.900 fine silver, these coins contain 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal, measuring a substantial 38.1 millimeters in diameter and 3.1 millimeters in thickness. Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse of the coin displays a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. Her profile is framed by stars and the date 1878. The reverse features a heraldic bald eagle with its wings spread wide, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR. This particular specimen has survived the decades in remarkable condition, certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64). Its preserved details offer a vivid look at the early craftsmanship of the Carson City facility during a pivotal era of American coinage.
