The year 1878 marked the debut of the iconic Morgan Dollar, a classic United States silver coin. This particular specimen highlights a fascinating design transition known to numismatists as the 7 over 8 tailfeathers variety. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin bears no mint mark, which is characteristic of the facility's production during this era. Containing 0.77344 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 0.900, this piece is certified in Mint State 62 condition. The obverse presents a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap, and her hair band is inscribed with the word "Liberty". Encircling her profile are thirteen stars, the date of issue (1878), and the Latin motto "E Pluribus Unum". On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted holding an olive branch alongside a bundle of arrows. The design is accompanied by the inscriptions "United States of America" and "One Dollar", as well as the national motto "In God We Trust". This variety is highly regarded for the visible remnants of the eagle's tailfeathers, where elements of an eight-feather design can be seen beneath a seven-feather correction.
