The 1878 Morgan Dollar represents the beginning of a classic era in American coinage, starting a design series that circulated for about 80 years. On the obverse side, Liberty is depicted in profile facing left. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with a band displaying her name. Surrounding this central portrait are the traditional Latin motto, E Pluribus Unum, thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1878 year of issue. The reverse side displays a bald eagle with its wings spread, grasping an olive branch and arrows in its talons. This central motif is framed by the inscriptions United States of America, the denomination of One Dollar, and the national motto, In God We Trust.
