In 1878, the United States introduced a new silver coin design that would become an icon of American coinage. This initial year of issue features the profile of Liberty on the obverse side, her hair adorned with a Phrygian cap and a band displaying the word Liberty. Encircling her portrait are thirteen stars, the year 1878, and the Latin motto E Pluribus Unum. The reverse side of this silver dollar displays a bald eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. Surrounding this central image are the inscriptions United States of America, One Dollar, and the national motto In God We Trust. Strikingly, this specific piece lacks a mint mark above the denomination, which indicates it was produced at the Philadelphia Mint. Crafted with 0.7734 troy ounces of silver at a purity of 0.900, this specimen has been certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64) condition. It offers onlookers a wonderful opportunity to study the fine details of the inaugural Morgan dollar design, particularly the transitional tail feather detailing on the reverse.
