The year 1878 marked the debut of a legendary American silver coin. Minted in Philadelphia, this inaugural issue of the Morgan Dollar series is struck from 0.900 fine silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. Because it was produced at the main Philadelphia Mint, the coin bears no mint mark, leaving the space below the wreath clean and open. This particular specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the original luster and sharp details of its first year of production. The obverse features a profile of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. Her hair band is inscribed with the word "Liberty", while the motto "E Pluribus Unum" curves along the top rim. Thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, flank the portrait, with the date 1878 anchored at the bottom. This design established an aesthetic that would circulate in American commerce for approximately 80 years. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with wings spread, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This specific variety features the seven-tailfeather design, which was part of the original 1878 reverse layout. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions "United States of America" and the denomination "One Dollar", while the solemn motto "In God We Trust" is positioned directly above the eagle's head.
