The year 1878 marked the debut of a silver coin that would circulate in American commerce for nearly eight decades. This particular specimen represents a fascinating early variety of the Morgan Dollar, distinguished by the presence of seven tailfeathers on the eagle and the specific 'Reverse of 78' design, which is identified by a parallel top feather on the olive branch. Crafted from 0.7734 troy ounces of silver, this coin survives in Extra Fine condition, retaining much of its original detail. The obverse presents a profile of Liberty adorned with a Phrygian cap, her hair band displaying the word 'LIBERTY'. Encircling this central portrait are the Latin motto 'E Pluribus Unum', thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1878 year of issue. The reverse side showcases a bald eagle gripping arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Above the eagle, the motto 'In God We Trust' is visible, while the outer inscriptions declare the issuing nation as 'United States of America' and the denomination as 'One Dollar'.
