The year 1878 marked the debut of the Morgan Dollar, a silver coin that would circulate throughout the United States for roughly eight decades. On the obverse side, Liberty is depicted in profile wearing a Phrygian cap, which is adorned with a band displaying her name. Framing her portrait are the words "E Pluribus Unum," the 1878 date, and thirteen stars representing the original colonies.
