0.7734 troy oz .900 1878 MS-61 (NGC)

The year 1878 marked the debut of a legendary American silver coin. This particular specimen, minted in Philadelphia, showcases the initial design variation featuring seven tailfeathers on the eagle. Struck with a composition containing 0.77344 ounces of pure silver, this piece has survived in remarkable condition, earning a certified grade of Mint State 61. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, which is adorned with a band displaying her name. Surrounding this central figure are thirteen stars, the year of manufacture, and the classic Latin motto, E Pluribus Unum. Because the Philadelphia Mint did not utilize a mint mark for this run, the space below the wreath on the reverse remains blank. The reverse of the coin presents a bald eagle holding both a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Encircling this patriotic image are the inscriptions United States of America, One Dollar, and the national motto, In God We Trust.
