In 1878, the Philadelphia Mint produced a silver dollar that would become a cornerstone of American numismatic study. This particular coin, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of silver, represents a compelling design transition. It features the specific seven tail feathers reverse of 1879 variety, a detail that draws the eye of keen observers who enjoy identifying subtle variations in early mint runs. The front of the coin displays a left-facing profile of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap, which is adorned with a band inscribed with the word Liberty. On the opposite side, a bald eagle holds both an olive branch and a cluster of arrows in its talons. Because this piece was struck in Philadelphia, it bears no mint mark. Graded Mint State 61 (MS-61), this specimen preserves the intricate details of a historic design era.
