1878 Morgan Dollar 7 TF Rev of 79 MS-65 NGC
In 1878, the United States introduced a new silver dollar designed by George T. Morgan, a coin that would become one of the most recognized issues in American numismatics. This inaugural year of the Morgan Dollar series saw a fascinating design transition. The initial reverse design depicted an eagle with eight tail feathers, but officials soon ordered a revision, reducing the count to seven tail feathers. This particular specimen showcases the revised reverse design of 1879, which features a flat breast on the eagle and a parallel top feather on the arrows. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this historic coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of 0.900 fine silver. It measures 38.1 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 3.1 mm. The obverse displays a classic profile of Lady Liberty, accompanied by the legible date of 1878 at the base. Legislation known as the Bland-Allison Act prompted the creation of this silver dollar series, leading to a mintage of 9,759,300 pieces for the Philadelphia issue in its debut year. This specific coin has survived the decades in remarkable condition, graded as a superb Mint State 65 (MS-65).
