In 1878, the Philadelphia Mint debuted a silver coin that would circulate across America for roughly eight decades. This early edition of the Morgan silver dollar, struck in 90 percent pure silver, represents the very beginning of a legendary numismatic series. Because it was produced at the main Philadelphia facility, the coin carries no mint mark, leaving its clean fields to emphasize the artistry of the engraving. The front of the coin showcases a profile of Liberty adorned with a Phrygian cap, a traditional emblem of freedom. Tucked into her hair, a band displays the word "LIBERTY" in clear lettering. Encircling her portrait are thirteen stars, the year 1878, and the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." On the reverse, a bald eagle holds both arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace. Above the eagle, the phrase "In God We Trust" is inscribed in Gothic script, while the legends "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" frame the entire design. This specific coin has survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of its initial 1878 release.
