1878-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-61 PCGS

0.9675 troy oz .900 1878 PCGS

In 1878, the San Francisco Mint produced a remarkable twenty dollar gold coin, a denomination often referred to as the Double Eagle. This substantial piece of United States monetary history contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, struck with a purity of 0.900. It represents a long-running design series that was minted from 1850 to 1907, capturing the artistic sensibilities of mid-nineteenth-century American coinage. The obverse of the coin showcases a profile of Liberty. She wears a diadem bordered with pearls, which clearly bears the inscription LIBERTY. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the year 1878 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, an eagle stretches its wings, supporting a shield upon its chest. Above the eagle, an oval of thirteen stars is illuminated by rays of light. The design is encircled by the inscriptions United States of America and the denomination Twenty Dollars. This specific specimen has survived in remarkable condition, graded as a Brilliant Mint State 61 (MS-61).
