Struck during the very first year of the series, this 1878 silver dollar represents a major milestone in American coinage. Minted at the San Francisco facility, the coin carries the 'S' mint mark on its reverse, indicating its West Coast origin. Crafted from 90 percent silver, it contains 0.77344 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse design features a left-facing profile of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap decorated with wheat and cotton, with the word 'LIBERTY' displayed upon her hair band. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars representing the original colonies, the date 1878, and the Latin motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with its wings spread, grasping arrows and an olive branch to symbolize both strength and peace. The eagle is encircled by a wreath, with the inscriptions 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and the denomination 'ONE DOLLAR' wrapping around the border. Above the eagle's head, the national motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is rendered in Gothic script.
