The year 1878 marked the beginning of a legendary era in United States coinage with the introduction of the Morgan Dollar. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular silver coin bears the 'S' mint mark on its reverse, positioned just above the denomination. Having survived more than a century in Mint State 63 condition, it offers a beautifully preserved look at the very first year of this iconic series. On the obverse, a left-facing profile of Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, her hair band inscribed with the word 'LIBERTY'. This central figure is encircled by the Latin motto 'E Pluribus Unum', thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1878 date of issue. The silver content of the coin totals 0.77344 troy ounces of 90 percent pure metal. The reverse displays a powerful bald eagle clutching both an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Surrounding this central motif are the inscriptions 'United States of America' and 'One Dollar', along with the national motto 'In God We Trust' positioned above the eagle.
