In 1878, the San Francisco Mint struck 9,774,000 silver dollars featuring a new design by George T. Morgan. This particular specimen survives today in an exceptional state of preservation, certified as Mint State 64 (MS-64). Crafted from 0.900 fine silver, the coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal, measuring a substantial 38.1 millimeters in diameter and 3.1 millimeters in thickness. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap. Thirteen stars encircle her image, representing the original colonies, accompanied by the classic Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the 1878 date. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with wings spread wide, clutching both arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is positioned above the eagle, while the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" frame the central design. The small "S" mint mark below the wreath identifies this coin as a product of the historic San Francisco minting facility.
