0.7734 troy oz .900 1878 Extra Fine

The year 1878 marked the debut of a legendary silver coin series that would circulate across America for roughly eighty years. Minted in San Francisco, this specific issue represents the very beginning of the Morgan Dollar era, carrying 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver within its 90 percent silver composition. The coin survives today in Extra Fine condition, preserving the intricate details of its historic 19th-century design. On the obverse, a profile of Liberty appears wearing a Phrygian cap, her hair band inscribed with the word "Liberty". This central portrait is encircled by the Latin motto "E Pluribus Unum", thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1878 date of issue. The reverse displays a powerful bald eagle holding both an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions "United States of America", "One Dollar", and the motto "In God We Trust". Just below the wreath on the reverse, the "S" mint mark identifies this piece as a product of the San Francisco Mint.
