In 1879, the San Francisco branch of the United States Mint produced a substantial run of double eagles, struck from 0.900 fine gold. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal, this issue represents a mature phase of the classic Liberty design. Designed by James B. Longacre, the coin belongs to the later evolution of the series, showcasing specific design updates that distinguish it from the earliest mid nineteenth century versions. The obverse features a left facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a majestic heraldic eagle guards a shield on its chest. This 1879 issue represents the Type II design evolution, which incorporated the motto "In God We Trust" in the circle of stars above the eagle. Additionally, the denomination is fully spelled out as "TWENTY DOLLARS" along the bottom rim, a change from the abbreviated "TWENTY D." found on earlier variations. With a total mintage of 1,223,800 pieces, this specific coin has survived in Extra Fine condition.
