In 1880, the Philadelphia Mint produced a substantial run of over three million gold half eagles. These five-dollar pieces, struck from 90 percent pure gold, carried a precious metal weight of 0.2419 troy ounces. Because they were minted at the main Philadelphia facility, they do not bear a mint mark, leaving the clean fields of the design to speak for themselves. While many of these coins entered active circulation to support the commerce of a growing nation, a select few survived the decades in pristine condition.
