The 1880-CC Morgan silver dollar is a fascinating artifact from the heyday of the American West. Struck at the Carson City Mint in Nevada, this coin is intimately tied to the legendary silver rushes of the era, including the famous Comstock Lode. With a total mintage of just 495,000 pieces for this year and mint mark, surviving specimens are highly prized by historians and enthusiasts alike, especially since vast quantities of silver dollars were melted down in later years. This specific coin showcases a rare design variation known as the 'Reverse of 78'. This variation is distinguished by a flatter breast on the central American bald eagle and parallel feathers on the arrows held in its talons. The reverse also features the eagle clutching an olive branch, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST positioned above the eagle's head. The obverse side, designed by George T. Morgan, presents a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with an agricultural wreath of wheat and cotton.
