The 1880 Morgan Dollar stands as a remarkable artifact from the late nineteenth century, minted during an era when silver coinage was central to American commerce. Produced at the New Orleans Mint, this coin bears the "O" mint mark positioned on the reverse side, just above the face value. Out of a total mintage of 5,305,000 for this specific year and location, this piece survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving its original luster and sharp details. This series, which spanned from 1878 to 1904 and returned for a final year in 1921, introduced a groundbreaking portrayal of Lady Liberty. Breaking with traditional European-style depictions, this design was the first to give Liberty a distinctly American appearance. On the obverse, her left-facing profile is crowned with a Phrygian cap. The cap is decorated with wheat and cotton, deliberate symbols chosen to represent the agricultural strength of the United States. The reverse of the coin showcases a detailed bald eagle with its wings spread wide, showcasing carefully rendered feathers.
