1880-S Morgan Dollar MS-65 PCGS (Obv/Rev Toning)

0.7734 troy oz .900 1880 MS-65 (PCGS)

Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 1880 silver dollar is a remarkable example of late nineteenth-century American coinage. Produced under the mandates of the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the coin was minted from 0.900 fine silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. It measures 38.1 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 3.1 mm. This specific issue was part of a total mintage of 8,900,000 pieces from the San Francisco facility that year. The coin features the classic designs created by George T. Morgan. On the obverse, a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a wreath of wheat and cotton. The reverse displays an eagle with wings spread wide, grasping an olive branch and three arrows in its talons. The legible inscriptions include the date 1880 and the motto "In God we trust". What makes this particular specimen extraordinary is its preservation and visual character. Graded Mint State 65 (MS-65), the coin has developed a striking natural coloration over time. The obverse surfaces display a dramatic array of toning, showing off rich shades of amber, deep purple, ocean blue, and vivid electric blue.
