This silver dollar, minted in San Francisco during 1880, carries a remarkable connection to one of the most famous numismatic discoveries in American history. It originated from the Redfield Hoard, a massive cache of approximately 400,000 coins found hidden behind a false wall. Following its discovery, this legendary hoard was sold at auction in 1976, and the coins recovered from it became widely celebrated as Redfield dollars. Struck from 0.900 fine silver with a precious metal weight of 0.7734 troy ounces, this piece is preserved in a high-grade state, certified as Mint State 65 (MS-65). The obverse presents a profile of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, her hair band inscribed with the word Liberty. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars, the 1880 issue date, and the classic motto E Pluribus Unum. The reverse side displays a bald eagle grasping both an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing a balance of peace and readiness. The inscriptions on this side include United States of America, the denomination One Dollar, and the phrase In God We Trust. The San Francisco origin is marked by the letter S on the reverse, linking this beautifully preserved coin directly to the historic California mint.
