0.0000 troy oz 1881 Very Fine

In 1881, the United States Mint produced a distinctive three-cent coin made from a copper-nickel alloy. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, showing the moderate wear of a coin that actively circulated in the post-Civil War era. Strikingly different from the silver three-cent pieces that preceded them, these durable base-metal coins helped resolve the coin shortages of the late nineteenth century. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. Her hair is bound up, and she wears a classic coronet inscribed with her name. Surrounding her profile is the legend indicating the issuing nation, and the date 1881 is positioned clearly at the bottom. The design was created by the noted engraver James Longacre, who brought a dignified, neoclassical aesthetic to the nation's minor coinage. On the reverse, the coin features a simple yet elegant design. The denomination is represented by the Roman numeral III, which is nestled inside a stylized wreath. This clean, bold imagery ensured that citizens could quickly identify the coin's value in daily commerce. Minted at the Philadelphia facility, which did not use a mintmark at the time, this coin represents a unique chapter in the evolution of American currency denominations.
