During the late nineteenth century, the United States minted a peculiar denomination that is rarely seen in modern pocket change: the three-cent piece. This 1881 issue, struck in a copper-nickel alloy at the Philadelphia Mint, offers a window into a fascinating era of American coinage. Surviving in Extra Fine condition, this specimen retains much of the crisp detail from its original production. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. Her hair is bound up, and she wears a classic coronet inscribed with her name. Surrounding this central figure is the proud legend declaring the issuing nation as the United States of America, with the date 1881 positioned clearly at the bottom. On the reverse, the coin showcases a minimalist approach to its denomination. Rather than Arabic numerals, the value is represented by the Roman numeral III. This central designation is encircled by a stylized wreath, creating a balanced and elegant composition that distinguishes the three-cent nickel series from other contemporary issues.
