The 1881 Morgan silver dollar minted in Carson City represents a fascinating era of American coining, especially when preserved in its distinctive Government Services Administration (GSA) holder. This particular specimen is certified in Mint State 62 condition, showcasing the original details that emerged from the Nevada press over a century ago. Composed of 0.7734 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 0.900, the coin is a heavy, tactile piece of history. On the obverse, the profile of Liberty faces left. She wears a Phrygian cap, a classic symbol of freedom, which features a hair band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Surrounding her portrait is the date of manufacture, 1881. The reverse displays a powerful bald eagle with its wings spread wide. In its talons, the eagle grasps both an olive branch and a cluster of arrows, representing peace and readiness. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed above the eagle, while the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the ONE DOLLAR denomination frame the design.
