The 1881 Indian Head Cent represents a classic era of United States coinage, struck in a durable alloy of 95 percent copper, with the remaining 5 percent composed of tin and zinc. This particular issue is preserved in Extra Fine condition, allowing observers to appreciate the finer details of its nineteenth-century craftsmanship. On the obverse, the design presents a striking profile of Liberty wearing an ornate feathered headdress. The word LIBERTY is visible on the band of the headdress, surrounded by the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1881 below the bust. This imagery, created by James B. Longacre, remains one of the most recognizable icons of American numismatic history. The reverse of the coin is dedicated to its denomination, featuring the words ONE CENT prominently displayed in the center. This text is framed by a stylized wreath, creating a balanced and elegant design that defined the small cent for generations. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin carries no mint mark, as was standard for the facility during this period.
