0.7734 troy oz .900 1881 MS-63 (NGC)

The 1881 Morgan silver dollar stands as a classic example of late nineteenth-century American coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this specific issue does not bear a mint mark, distinguishing it from those produced at branch facilities. It was part of an original production run of 9,160,000 pieces, each crafted from 0.900 fine silver and containing exactly 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. Measuring 38.1 millimeters in diameter and 3.1 millimeters in thickness, the coin represents a substantial and tactile piece of history, now preserved in certified Mint State 63 condition. Designed by George T. Morgan, the coin's obverse displays a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty. Her hair is adorned with a symbolic agricultural wreath woven with cotton and wheat, representing the nation's agricultural heritage. The word LIBERTY is inscribed upon her hair band. Encircling the portrait are thirteen stars, the year 1881, and the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse side presents a powerful bald eagle with its wings spread wide. In its talons, the national bird holds arrows and an olive branch. Surrounding this central motif are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the denomination ONE DOLLAR, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Together, these elements create a harmonious and enduring design that continues to captivate those who study historic coinage.
