In 1881, the San Francisco Mint produced a run of 12,760,000 silver dollars. Today, surviving examples from this specific year and mint are highly regarded by enthusiasts, particularly when they survive in exceptional condition. This specific coin has been certified at the lofty grade of Mint State 68 (MS-68), indicating an extraordinary level of preservation that has kept its original details incredibly sharp over the decades. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap, which is adorned with a hair band clearly displaying the word LIBERTY. Encircling this central portrait is the traditional Latin motto E Pluribus Unum, alongside thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1881 date of manufacture. On the reverse, a bald eagle holds an olive branch and a cluster of arrows in its talons. The design is framed by the inscriptions United States of America and the denomination One Dollar. Above the eagle, the motto In God We Trust is inscribed. Just below the wreath on this side, the S mint mark indicates its origin at the San Francisco facility. Struck with a silver purity of 0.900, this coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal.
