In 1882, the Philadelphia Mint produced a mere 5,000 of these delicate gold dollar coins. Strikingly small yet rich in detail, this issue belongs to the celebrated Indian Head gold series. Because it bears no mintmark, we know it was struck at the main United States minting facility in Philadelphia, representing a quiet year of production for the denomination. This particular specimen has survived the decades in a breathtaking state of preservation, certified by professional graders at the lofty grade of Mint State 68 (MS-68). Finding a nineteenth-century gold coin with such pristine surfaces and original luster is an incredibly rare occurrence for enthusiasts of early American coinage. Each of these tiny treasures was struck from 90 percent pure gold, containing just under 0.05 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse features the stylized portrait wearing a feathered headdress, while the reverse displays the denomination and the date of manufacture wrapped within a wreath.
