1882 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle PR-66+ DCAM PCGS

0.1209 troy oz .900 1882 PCGS

In 1882, the Philadelphia Mint produced an incredibly small run of proof gold coins, striking a mere 67 examples of the Liberty Quarter Eagle. Today, encountering one of these rare survivors is a remarkable event for numismatists. This specific coin has been graded in an exceptional Proof 66+ Deep Cameo condition, highlighting the intense contrast between its frosted design elements and mirror-like fields. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars. Below her portrait sits the date of 1882. On the reverse, an eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination of 2 1/2 D. Struck from 90 percent pure gold with a metal content of 0.1209 troy ounces, this coin represents a high-water mark of nineteenth-century American proof coinage.
