In 1882, the Carson City mint in Nevada produced a limited run of five-dollar gold coins, striking just 82,817 pieces. These half eagles represent a fascinating era of American coin production, minted directly in the American West during a period of intense silver and gold extraction. This particular specimen has survived the decades with an Extremely Fine grade of XF-45, showing that it circulated in commerce but still retains much of its original detail. The obverse of the coin features the classic profile of Liberty facing left, her hair secured in a bun with a few loose curls cascading down her neck. She wears a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Encircling her portrait are thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the year 1882 stamped boldly at the bottom. On the reverse, the Carson City origin is marked by the distinct CC mint mark, positioned below an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons.
