1882 Morgan Dollar AU

In 1882, the Philadelphia Mint produced a major run of silver dollars, releasing over eleven million of these heavy coins into circulation. This particular issue belongs to the famous Morgan series, a family of silver coins that served as a staple of daily commerce in the United States for close to eight decades. Struck in 90 percent silver, each coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse side presents a profile of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a traditional emblem of freedom. Tucked into her hair band is the word Liberty, while the motto E Pluribus Unum curves along the upper rim. Thirteen stars flank the portrait, representing the original colonies, with the 1882 date positioned at the bottom. Because this coin was struck at the main Philadelphia facility, it features no mint mark. On the reverse, a bald eagle spreads its wings, grasping both a peaceful olive branch and arrows of defense. The words United States of America and the denomination One Dollar frame the central design. Above the eagle, the national motto In God We Trust is inscribed in Gothic script, completing a design that remains one of the most celebrated in American numismatic history.
