The 1882 Morgan silver dollar stands as a classic representative of America's late nineteenth-century circulating coinage. Struck at the main United States Mint in Philadelphia, this particular issue carries no mint mark, a traditional feature of the facility's output. These heavy silver coins, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of 90 percent pure silver, were a staple of daily commerce, serving the public as active currency for roughly eight decades. The obverse features a profile of Liberty adorned with a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. Tucked into her hair band is the word "LIBERTY," while the outer border of the coin is encircled by the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1882 year of manufacture. This brilliant uncirculated specimen retains the original luster and crisp details as they emerged from the coining press. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with its wings spread, grasping both an olive branch of peace and arrows of readiness. The national motto "In God We Trust" is inscribed in Gothic script directly above the eagle. Framing this central motif are the legends "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the "ONE DOLLAR" denomination, completing a design that remains one of the most recognized and studied in American numismatic history.
