1882-O/S Morgan Dollar MS-62 PCGS (Strong)

0.7734 troy oz .900 1882 MS-62 (PCGS)

The 1882 Morgan silver dollar from the New Orleans Mint holds a captivating secret for those who look closely. This specific variety, struck in 90% silver, features a remarkable overmintmark. Underneath the prominent 'O' mint mark of the New Orleans facility, distinct remnants of an 'S' mint mark from the San Francisco Mint are clearly visible, marking a moment of tool reuse and adaptation in nineteenth-century minting. On the obverse, the design presents Lady Liberty facing left, adorned with a Phrygian cap. Her hair band is inscribed with the word 'Liberty', and she is encircled by the Latin motto 'E Pluribus Unum', the 1882 date, and thirteen stars representing the original colonies. This example contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, carrying a weight and presence that defined American commerce during the Pre-1933 era. The reverse depicts a heraldic bald eagle with its wings spread, grasping an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions 'United States of America' and the denomination 'One Dollar', along with the national motto 'In God We Trust' positioned above the bird. This particular coin has survived the decades in remarkable condition, certified by professional grading services at Mint State 62.
