In 1883, the Kingdom of Hawaii issued a distinctive silver ten-cent piece, commonly referred to as a dime or keneta. This coin represents a fascinating era of Hawaiian sovereignty, minted on behalf of the island nation at the San Francisco Mint in California. Struck in 0.900 fine silver, each coin contains approximately 0.07234 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of King Kalakaua, who ruled the Hawaiian Kingdom during the late nineteenth century. Surrounding his likeness is his royal title, establishing his authority over the islands. This particular specimen is preserved in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while retaining its core design elements. The reverse displays the intricate coat of arms of the Kingdom of Hawaii, centered on a royal shield. This emblem is surrounded by traditional Hawaiian text, including the phrase "UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO" along with the denomination "ONE DIME" and "SENETA" (spelled as KENETA on the coin). This issue serves as a tangible connection to the independent monarchy of Hawaii before it became a United States territory.
