1883 Morgan Dollar MS-64 PCGS

0.7734 troy oz .900 1883 MS-64 (PCGS)

The 1883 Morgan silver dollar stands as a remarkable artifact from a turbulent era in American monetary history. Minted in Philadelphia during the height of the Free Silver Movement, this coin represents the intense national debate between Goldbugs and Silverites. The legislation that set this production in motion, the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, mandated the government to purchase and coin vast amounts of silver, resulting in a mintage of 12,290,000 pieces for this specific year. Designed by George T. Morgan, the coin features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse. She wears a Phrygian cap decorated with cotton and wheat, symbolizing the nation's agricultural abundance. The classic Latin motto, E Pluribus Unum, curves along the upper rim, while the year 1883 is anchored at the bottom. The reverse displays a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide, holding an olive branch of peace and arrows of readiness. Surrounding this central image are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR, along with the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, positioned above the eagle's head. Struck in 0.900 fine silver with a total silver content of 0.7734 troy ounces, this specimen measures 38.1 mm in diameter. This particular coin has been certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64), preserving the crisp details of Morgan's engraving just as it looked when it left the Philadelphia Mint over a century ago.
