The 1883 Morgan silver dollar stands as a remarkable survivor from an era of massive industrial expansion and monetary debate. Struck at the main United States Mint in Philadelphia, this coin was born from the mandates of the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, a piece of legislation that required the American government to purchase vast quantities of silver bullion and transform it into legal tender. This particular specimen has survived the decades in exceptional condition, graded as a superb Mint State 65 (MS-65), indicating a coin that retains its original luster and sharp details. Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty. Rather than depicting a classical Greek figure, the designer chose an American woman as his model, adorning her hair with a Phrygian cap and a crown woven from native agricultural staples, specifically cotton and wheat. The word LIBERTY is visible on her hairband. On the reverse, a majestic bald eagle spreads its wings while holding an olive branch of peace in one talon and three arrows of war in the other. The bird is encircled by a laurel wreath, with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the face value of ONE DOLLAR surrounding the central design. Containing 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver with a fineness of 0.900, the coin has a substantial physical presence. It measures 38.1 millimeters in diameter and 3.1 millimeters in thickness. Out of a total mintage of 12,290,000 struck in Philadelphia in 1883, finding a piece preserved in such a high state of preservation offers a fascinating glimpse into the artistry of nineteenth-century American coinage.
