0.7734 troy oz .900 1883 Brilliant Unc

The 1883 Morgan silver dollar struck at the New Orleans Mint holds a captivating secret for those who look closely. This specific issue, categorized as the VAM-36A variety, showcases a remarkable minting anomaly known as a die clash error. During the coining process, the dies collided without a planchet between them, leaving a physical imprint of one die's design directly onto the other. This collision resulted in a highly unusual letter transfer from the obverse side to the reverse. Specifically, the letter 'E' from the word 'LIBERTY' on the headband of the obverse portrait was pressed into the reverse die. On the struck coin, this stray letter is visible in the space between the eagle's tail feathers and the upper portion of the wreath. Finding such a distinct letter transfer is an exceptionally rare occurrence across any United States coin series, making this Brilliant Uncirculated specimen a compelling study in the mechanics of nineteenth-century minting.
