In 1883, the New Orleans Mint produced over eight million silver dollars, contributing to the resurgence of silver coinage in American commerce. This particular specimen is preserved in a high-grade Mint State 64 condition, displaying a beautiful, natural coloration that makes it a captivating piece for study. Struck under the legislative authority of the Bland-Allison Act, these heavy silver coins reestablished the dollar denomination in daily circulation across the United States. The obverse features the classic left-facing profile of Lady Liberty, who wears a crown inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars flank her portrait, representing the original colonies, accompanied by the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the reverse, an American bald eagle is depicted with wings spread, grasping an olive branch and arrows to symbolize both peace and readiness. The reverse also bears the mint mark O, indicating its origin in Louisiana, along with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Crafted from 90 percent fine silver, this coin measures 38.1 millimeters in diameter and 3.1 millimeters in thickness, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. The combination of its historic New Orleans origin, its impressive preservation state, and the unique visual character of its toning offers a fascinating window into late nineteenth-century American coinage.
