In 1883, the San Francisco Mint struck a significant run of classic United States gold coinage, including the Liberty Gold Double Eagle. These massive pieces carried a face value of twenty dollars and were composed of 90 percent pure gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal. This particular specimen survived the decades in remarkable condition, earning a certified Mint State 60 (MS-60) grade. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty, her hair secured in a soft bun with curls cascading down her neck, wearing a coronet inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her portrait, representing the original colonies, with the year 1883 anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows, shielded by a central crest, with the mint mark S positioned below to denote its origin in San Francisco.
