1883-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-61 PCGS

In 1883, the San Francisco Mint struck a significant run of twenty dollar gold coins, producing 1,189,000 of these large Liberty Double Eagles. This particular specimen has survived the decades in remarkable condition, earning a certified grade of Mint State 61 (MS-61). Struck from 90 percent pure gold, each of these impressive pieces contains 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal, representing the peak of circulating American coinage from the late nineteenth century. The obverse features a classic profile of Liberty, her hair styled in a soft bun with loose curls cascading down her neck, crowned with a coronet. The year 1883 is anchored at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle is depicted beneath a cluster of stars and the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. The surrounding inscription displays the name of the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, along with the denomination, TWENTY DOLLARS. Positioned just below the eagle, the subtle S mint mark identifies this coin as a product of the historic San Francisco facility.
