The 1883 Morgan silver dollar stands as a classic representative of late nineteenth-century American coinage. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 0.900. Having survived the decades in an exceptionally well-preserved state, this specimen is graded as About Uncirculated AU-58, showing only the slightest traces of wear on its high design points. On the obverse, the profile of Liberty is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. This side is framed by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, and bears the classic Latin motto E Pluribus Unum along with the 1883 year of issue. The word Liberty is also inscribed upon the band of her cap. The reverse of the coin features a heraldic bald eagle with its wings spread, clutching both an olive branch of peace and arrows of strength. Surrounding the central eagle are the inscriptions United States of America and the denomination, One Dollar. The motto In God We Trust is positioned above the eagle, while the S mint mark, indicating its origin at the San Francisco Mint, is located just below the wreath.
