Struck in the late nineteenth century, this 1884 silver dollar represents a classic era of American coinage. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, this issue does not carry a mint mark, distinguishing it from those struck at branch facilities. It was part of a large production run that exceeded 14 million pieces, yet finding one preserved in a graded Mint State 64 condition offers a wonderful glimpse into the original details of the design. George T. Morgan designed both sides of this heavy silver coin, which measures 38.1 mm in diameter and 3.1 mm in thickness. The front displays a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with agricultural elements, specifically cotton and wheat. The word LIBERTY is inscribed on her band, and the designer's initial, a small M, sits discreetly at the base of her neck. On the back, an eagle with spread wings clutches an olive branch alongside arrows, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Each of these historic coins is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. The combination of its substantial physical presence, detailed engraving, and high-grade preservation makes this 1884 issue a compelling subject for study and appreciation.
