This silver dollar, struck in 1884 at the New Orleans Mint, represents a fascinating chapter in American coinage history. It was minted during a period of intense national debate surrounding the monetization of silver versus gold, a political struggle closely tied to the Bland-Allison Act. Containing 0.7734 troy ounces of 0.900 fine silver, this coin measures 38.1 millimeters in diameter and stands as a weighty testament to the era's monetary policy. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, who wears a Phrygian cap adorned with a wreath of cotton and wheat. This side is inscribed with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the date 1884, and the word LIBERTY. On the reverse, a bald eagle with spread wings grasps an olive branch alongside arrows.
